Cape Ann Atelier
Architectural Minimalist
A portrait of the project
Cape Ann Atelier sits in Gloucester, MA — a architectural minimalist kitchen built around the architecture, the light, and the way this family actually lives. A waterfront artist's home where the kitchen had to function as both a serious workspace and a quiet backdrop to the view.
The challenge
A waterfront artist's home where the kitchen had to function as both a serious workspace and a quiet backdrop to the view. Existing dropped ceilings and harsh fluorescent lighting were killing the room.
The solution
A full re-architecture: ceiling raised to the rafters, north-wall windows reopened, and a near-monochrome plan in matte graphite with a single 14ft Pietra Cardosa island as the gravity point.

Architect's approach
How we designed it.
Before we drew a cabinet, we redrew the room. Structural walls moved, a ceiling plane was raised, windows were restored to their original openings, and mechanical systems were re-routed to disappear. The kitchen design only began once the architecture of the room could finally support it.

About the style
Architect-Led Transformations.
Architect-led transformations begin one step before cabinetry. Walls move. Ceilings open. Windows return. The kitchen is re-architected to belong to the house — and only then do finishes arrive. It is the most expensive way to start and almost always the most economical way to finish.
