Beacon Hill Townhouse

Transitional Luxury

A portrait of the project

Beacon Hill Townhouse sits in Boston, MA — a transitional luxury kitchen built around the architecture, the light, and the way this family actually lives. A 19th-century Beacon Hill townhouse with a narrow footprint, low ceilings, and a kitchen that had been awkwardly partitioned during a 1980s renovation.

The challenge

A 19th-century Beacon Hill townhouse with a narrow footprint, low ceilings, and a kitchen that had been awkwardly partitioned during a 1980s renovation. The owners wanted contemporary function without disturbing the home's historic architecture.

The solution

We removed the partition wall, restored the original window proportions, and inserted a long inset-cabinet plan with a slim marble island. Concealed appliance towers preserve sightlines to the parlor floor.

Architect's approach

How we designed it.

Our approach was to honor the home's existing architecture rather than overwrite it. We preserved original mouldings, restored window proportions, and let the new cabinetry speak in the same vocabulary as the rest of the house — only sharper, only quieter. Nothing in this room argues with the rooms next to it.

About the style

Transitional Kitchens.

Transitional kitchens borrow the discipline of modernism and the warmth of tradition. Inset shaker doors, honed marble, unlacquered brass — each material is chosen for how it will age, not just how it photographs. It is a style built for the long quiet of family life.
