Warm Transitional

A portrait of the project

Lexington Arts and Crafts sits in Lexington, MA — a warm transitional kitchen built around the architecture, the light, and the way this family actually lives. An Arts and Crafts home where two generations cook together.

The challenge

An Arts and Crafts home where two generations cook together. The existing kitchen had no clear working zones and the only island was a movable cart.

The solution

A two-island plan — one for prep, one for gathering — with a quartzite-topped baking station at counter height. Painted walnut perimeter cabinetry warms the room.

Architect's approach

How we designed it.

Our approach was to honor the home's existing architecture rather than overwrite it. We preserved original mouldings, restored window proportions, and let the new cabinetry speak in the same vocabulary as the rest of the house — only sharper, only quieter. Nothing in this room argues with the rooms next to it.

About the style

Transitional Kitchens.

Transitional kitchens borrow the discipline of modernism and the warmth of tradition. Inset shaker doors, honed marble, unlacquered brass — each material is chosen for how it will age, not just how it photographs. It is a style built for the long quiet of family life.
